Panama Hats

Panama hat

The Panama hat is one of the original traditional components of the sartorial treasures of numerous indigenous communities in the provinces of Azuay and Manabi in the south of Ecuador, ever since the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. The manufacture of this straw hat with leaves of carludovica palmata (tree of the cyclanthacees family), called straws of toquilla, rests largely therefore, once again, on a traditional manual, and essentially feminine ability.

How can you evaluate the quality of a Panama Hat?

The quality of a panama hat can vary significantly between Cuenca and Montecristi models. This quality is judged by the fineness of the straw and the tightness of the weave. A series of concentric rings in the crown, called carreras, are created as new strands of straw are added. The larger, the number of carreras, the tighter the weave and the finer the panama hat. A simple cuenca can take 3 days to weave, and the more finest montecristi is unique and represents months of work.

To make it more convenient for you, our catalogue addresses this division and shows in real size a picture of the weave for each model.
